Install Office 2003 on Linux OS

MS Office 2003 is  a good office application suit, many people like it and I am too. I am using Window OS for my laptop and Ubuntu Linux for desktop my pc. I much like MS Office programs for my official as well as unofficial jobs.  which I find in my laptop Window OS. I always require to inter transfer some useful files between my laptop and pc. But when I open MS Office files with Open office.org of linux (or vise-versa) I feel uncomfortable because of some incompatibility of file between the two office application programs. So I was in search of linux version of MS Office, which is not launched till now by Microsoft.

Then I come to know  about the Wine application of by which one can run install and run Window application on Linux.

About Wine:
Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows. It is an open source free software.

With this software you can install and run:
  • MS Word
  • MS Power Point
  • MS Excel
  • MS Access

It is easy and I have installed MS Office 2003 professional edition on my Ubuntu Linux 8.10 Desktop Edition with the help of Wine software. But you can install it on any linux machine. Wine is very useful software, now I find my MS Word, MS Power Point and all same to same as in Window OS.

Pre-Requirement to Installation:
  • PC with Ubuntu Linux
  • Installation CD of MS office 2003
  • Your PC should be on Internet Connection

Step for Installation:

1. Open a terminal:  Application ---> Terminal

2. Type comd:    sudo apt-get install wine
[What we did here is send an argument to the package manager to install an application called wine. The sudo command places us into the root user as you need to be the root user to install applications. ]

[Note: Fedora people can just change sudo apt-get install to su -c"yum install" and it will work. ]

3. It will prompt for root pwd(type root pwd)

4. It will asked to confirm the download of wine software : Press Y
[ pressing Y will connect to  http://us.archive.ubuntu.com for downloading of wine software and     automatically get installed]

5. After installation is over one new tab 'Wine' will appear in your Application menu.

6. Now put your Office 2003 CD into drive, it get detected and appear on desktop with name 'My Disc'.

7. Now give the command:      cd  /media/'My Disc'/
[Change your working directory to your cdrom Office 2003 Setup.exe folder. Check where your cdrom get mount on your PC, it should be either “/media/My Disc” folder or “/media/cdrom” folder. In case of 'My Disc' it should be single coat ( '  ' ) otherwise change directory command will not work.]

8. Now give following command in terminal :         wine  setup.exe

9. After this you will be get as were in window, act accordingly.

10. After finishing installation process come out of the terminal window by typing 'Exit ' command.
